[alfa] Berlinas get more attention than Spiders or GTVs
I could have written this message several times in the last year. This
past weekend my son and I took the'73 Berlina to a bike race in Alabama
where we received continuous "cool car" comments all weekend. Its not the
first time this has happened, but I guess what struck me is that this
season I've also driven my '73 Spider and the '73 GTV to multiple bike
races (same general crowd in this southeastern mountain bike racing series)
and the Berlina is ALWAYS generating more interest and comments than either
the Spider or GTV.
While trying to use a fleet of 30 year old cars as daily drivers is a lot
of work, requiring constant maintenance (one or more always needs
something), it is still really gratifying when a parade strangers strike up
a conversation that lets you know that others appreciate the work to keep
these old cars on the road and being used. You can tell on the interstate
too, when other travelers notice the Alfa and you can see the conversation
and looks going on the other car.
So, to answer a few questions recently posted here: We were able to run at
4000RPM+/~@85mph for hours on end, got 24+ mpg with two bikes on the roof,
we carried a full load of equipment for the weekend trip and the car served
admirably in the role of daily driving workhorse. Makes all that
maintenance time worthwhile!
And I doubt it would happen without the ongoing technical support from the
Alfa Digest. It time to send another contribution...
