[alfa] Re: total loss

the finances on these total/salvage title buy backs can work out pretty well. should do some research first on what it will cost to repair just to make sure you can come out of it whole. To be honest the rest of the car also should be in pretty good shape to justify the effort.
when my verde was totaled (not my fault, honest!) the value was low enough that it might have covered the repairs (which were pretty extensive) - maybe not. So i elected to buy it back from the insurance company for $67, put some of the parts in the new Milano (hard to buy a 3.0 engine & Recaro interior for $67 otherwise). been parting it slowly since then.
The one thing you should at least consider is that a salvage title will always effect merchantability. In other words it will be a problem in selling the car, and the way that is usually remedied is to lower the price - a lot. In point of fact it might not have a real impact on the sale price of a used spider (since their prices are pretty well decpreciated already), however, it will cause buyers to second think the purchase and you'll always have to sell for less than an equivalent car of same type and condition. If you plan on keeping it for a long time (which you seem to be saying) then you really have nothing to lose.
good luck with it.
