[alfa] GTV-6 ECU interchangability

Does anyone know if it's possible to run an '81-83 GTV-6 with an 
'84-89 ECU?  The difference is that a lot of the ingnition stuff is 
in the fuel ECU in the later cars and I'm wondering if you put one of 
those ECUs in an earlier car, would that extra circuitry just be 
along for the ride, or would the fuel portion of the ECU fail to 
function because it tries to communicate with the built-in ignition 
stuff?  Any thoughts?  (Or better yet, 'been-there, done-that?')
