Hi Joe:

Don't know if there was ever any official mandate, but the downfall of 
inboard brakes in F1 began after several failures of the FRONT inboard 
brakes on the Lotus 72's.  One such failure claimed the life of Jochen 
Rindt at Monza in '70, when one of the halfshafts failed.  That's just my 
recollection, but at the time I was only 12 years old, and I think I read 
that in Road & Track magazine.
