I'm pretty sure that inboard rear brakes lived on (at least with some 
teams) until at least the late '70s.

I too have read that Jochen Rindt's 1970 accident pretty much ended 
everyone's interest in front inboard brakes, but I've seen references 
to (and seen cars in museums, I think) much later uses of inboard 
rear brakes.

My theory is that the weight reduction provided by carbon discs 
changed the cost/benefit relationship enough that inboard brakes were 
no longer worth the trouble, even on the rear, but that's really just 
a guess.  I'm not even sure when carbon discs started to see use in 
F1, although I think they saw their first use on fighter aircraft in 
the early '70s.
