Subaru produced its first front wheel drive boxer engined car, the 1000
Deluxe, in 1965.  See:

It was this engine that Subaru continued to develop through the early
eighties, to a maximum capacity of 1800cc.  

The Alfasud was shown at Turin in 1971, by which time the Subaru engine had
been in mass production for some six years.  

That pretty much rules out the Subaru engine being a development of the Alfa
engine.
