I recently replaced a cheap, nasty digital multimeter which finally died with a Fluke 179.  Tom is right, it was certainly not cheap (somwhere in the middle of Biba's quoted price range), but I'm viewing this as a long term investment.  I was spoiled by 8 years of hardware design experience where we were given Fluke 87's; like any really high quality tool, they are such a joy to use that you find yourself making excuses to use it!  Mine came in a kit with several probe options; good probes are almost as helpful as a nice multimeter, IMO, eliminating the need for three hands in many situations.

The 179 model has a lighted display and a handy min/max feature which records the highest and lowest reading of a time-varying signal, as well as an analog bar graph display.  I bought it over the significantly cheaper model 112 partly because it offers temperature measurement, which I thought might be useful for automotive applications.  It is also highly accurate and very rugged (drop certified to a height of 1 meter).  Obviously it is not the ideal choice for everyone but it is a very nice meter.  I bought it at a local tool specialist since I needed it in a hurry to diagnose an alternator problem, but an online search turned up a number of places offering significant discounts.
