Biba,
Here's what I learned from a wise old sage (probably Errol Street).
Put the piston at TDC, shove a long piece of soft fuzzy cotton cord down 
the hole until the combustion
chamber is filled up to the bottom of the plug hole.  Do your thing with 
the repair kit.
Suck out metal bits with a shop vac and fish out the cord with a small 
hook.  Any metal not sucked up
will stick to the cord.
