    I won't quote both the other solutions since I hate long quotes.
Other than heating the needle or replacing it with a wooden substitute
you might try clipping off the needle portion rubbing the face. You shouldn't
need to remove much at all and that much missing length is hardly noticed.
I found a pair of toenail cutters (!!) to be the perfect tool for doing the job 
without removing the needle.
