[alfa] Rear-wheel drive versus Front-wheel drive

Disclaimer One: The purist in me says rear-wheel drive.

However, given the same conditions, driver (equally skilled in bother
configuration) and track the fact is a front drive Alfa will piss all over
an older rear drive Alfa. For God's sake, the early mini Cooper S could
more than give a Bertone GTV a run for its money.

Disclaimer Two: Having owned several early minis I thought the handling
sucked compared to Lancia Beta Coupe. I could never understand why anyone
thought they were that great. Even heavily modded.

The best handling stock road car I have ever driven is...........

An Alfa Romeo 33. A 1300cc, 1984 model. Screamed up to 100mph (5 great
ratios) and was so easy to throttle steer it was scary. I don't consider
myself a very skilled driver but this thing was so easy to drive fast and it
was really exhilarating. That and the Alfasud were the ones that got away
from America. Of course, the Alfasud had a shelf life of about 3 years
before it rusted away.

The reality is modern front drivers can be great handling. Sure different
techniques are required but that is where skill overcomes fantasy.

Disclaimer Three: Sad to say I do not like the look of the current GTV's.

Don't want to start a war of words here ;)
