Skip, I have to fully agree with the distortion answer. Anytime an attempt  
is made to polish a lens( a windshield IS a lens with front & back plano  
surfaces ), the resultant change in curvature makes an effective change in power  
or strength of that lens. Therefor there is, of necessity, an induced 
distortion  in the resultant lens.
